YANGON, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Flavors representing Myanmar's diverse ethnic groups and regions converged at the Myanmar Traditional Food Show and Competition in Yangon on Saturday, with the country's largest traditional food event showcasing a wide range of local cuisines, snacks, beverages and products.

The event was organized by the Myanmar Restaurant Association (MRA) under the supervision of the Ministry of Hotels, Tourism and Culture.

U Zayyar Myo Aung, deputy director general of the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism under the Ministry, said the event aims to promote gastronomy tourism by showcasing Myanmar's rich food culture.

"The two-day event features 125 booths, while seven famous restaurants and hotels competed in the traditional food competition by preparing fine-dining courses," he said.

"Discussion sessions are also held, with experienced restaurant owners sharing knowledge about business development, expanding brands overseas and maintaining strong brands," he added.

Daw Sanda Khin, founder and chair of the Myanmar Cultural Heritage Trust, said food represents an important part of culture.

"Myanmar is home to many ethnic groups, each with its own unique cuisine. We have a rich variety of traditional foods, but we still need to do more to introduce them to the international community. The more we promote our food internationally, the more people will learn about our country," she said.

She said events like this can encourage both small and large restaurants, promote tourism and create more job opportunities for local communities.

Regional exhibitors showcased foods and products from their respective regions at the event.

Saw Aung Kyaw Nyein, an exhibitor from Kayin state, said they display local foods, handicrafts and traditional clothing from Kayin state and promote Hpa-An as a travel destination, one of the most visited places in Kayin state, to visitors.

"Visitors can explore foods, clothing and products from different ethnic groups all in one place. We are happy to see so many people showing interest in Hpa-An travel destination and its traditional products," he said.

May Zin Oo, an exhibitor from Ayeyarwady region, said the event provides valuable networking opportunities for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

"There are many MSME entrepreneurs here, and we can learn from one another by seeing how others display and promote their products. We also have the chance to make new business connections," she said.

She said she displays and sells dried fish produced in Ayeyarwady region and offered visitors samples of dried fish served with Myanmar traditional sticky rice with beans.

"I am very thankful for this event because it allows us to connect directly with the public. Visitors can taste our products and purchase them directly," she said.

Khin Maung Htay, an exhibitor from Bagan, said local specialties from the region, including jaggery, tamarind products, lacquerware and sand paintings, are displayed at the event.

"Bagan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient temples. Events like this help promote not only our local food but also our regional products. I am very proud to be part of it," he said.

Nay Zaw Aung, general secretary of the MRA, said the event benefits food producers, businesses and visitors.

"Food brings people happiness. Through this event, food vendors can promote their products, while visitors can gain a greater appreciation of Myanmar's rich food culture. I hope the event will help expand Myanmar's food and beverage industry and create more opportunities for people working in the sector," he said.

The event runs through Sunday, offering visitors an opportunity to experience Myanmar's diverse food culture, traditional products and ethnic cuisines.
