DAMASCUS, July 26 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres here on Sunday called for the immediate removal of all remaining sanctions on Syria and for international support for the country's reconstruction efforts.
"I welcome steps that have eased sanctions and opened new possibilities for economic recovery," Guterres told a press conference upon wrapping up a two-day visit to Syria.
He urged the international community to support Syria's recovery by investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and livelihoods, while stepping up efforts to enable the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees.
He also reaffirmed the UN's readiness to assist Syria in advancing a comprehensive political transition, including transitional justice, national reconciliation, constitutional reform, and preparations for free and fair elections.
During the first visit to Damascus by a UN chief since 2009, Guterres met with the country's interim leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, foreign chief Asaad al-Shaibani and other senior officials, as well as representatives from civil society, women's and youth groups, and Syria's diverse communities. ■
