CAPE TOWN, July 27 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed in separate shooting incidents since Sunday evening in South Africa's Western Cape province, police said on Monday.

The latest shooting occurred in Gugulethu, a township in Cape Town about 20 km southeast of the city center, during the early hours of Monday, leaving five people dead and another injured, the South African Police Service in Western Cape said in a statement.

According to the statement, police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence and found the victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. "Four men and one woman, aged between 19 and 23, were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel. A 20-year-old woman who sustained gunshot wounds was transported to a medical facility for treatment," police said.

Preliminary investigations indicated that two unidentified armed men broke into the house, police said. "The suspects allegedly demanded a firearm before opening fire on the occupants. They fled the scene and have not yet been arrested."

In a separate shooting in Stellenbosch, a town roughly 50 km east of Cape Town, on Sunday evening, four people were killed and four others, including two police officers, were injured.

Later Sunday night in Manenberg, a township neighboring Gugulethu in Cape Town, two men aged 38 and 54 were killed, while a 74-year-old woman was seriously wounded in another shooting.

Police said investigations into the motives behind the shootings are underway. ■
