LIMA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Peru and Venezuela will begin a gradual process to restore bilateral relations, which have been strained since July 2024, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said Friday.

"The Government of the Republic of Peru and the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela are pleased to inform that they have decided to begin a gradual process toward the comprehensive resumption of bilateral relations," the ministry said in a statement.

In the first stage, the two countries will resume consular relations as an initial measure toward the full restoration of bilateral ties, with the immediate purpose of ensuring consular protection and services for their nationals residing in both countries, it said.

The ministry said the process is based on the countries' historic ties of friendship and Latin American solidarity, and is aimed at promoting the development and well-being of their peoples.

Diplomatic tensions between Lima and Caracas date back to July 2024, when Peru withdrew its accredited representatives from the Venezuelan capital after Venezuela severed diplomatic relations. ■
